To get more alters, you need to increase the number of slots by upgrading your Qubit Level by finding Qubit Chip locations. You start off in The Alters with the Technician, but there are different levels of alters available as you progress through areas. The best alters in The Alters
The best alters for early in the game are the Miner and the Scientist. You should focus on these two alters at first, as the Miner helps bring in valuable resources by mining 50% quicker, and the Scientist can research upgrades in the Research Lab.
The Scientist is vital to mission success, and getting started on research upgrades early gives you a headstart with base upgrades, and more importantly, a suit help exploration. Though you'll be able to unlock both of these alters initially, you can also unlock the Botanist, but it's best to prioritize the Scientist and the Miner.

The Technician is a branch of yourself from a choice you made at 19 years old, if you hadn't gone to college and instead stood up to your dad. This is the first alter you unlock and provides +50% efficiency when doing base maintenance.
Miner
The Miner is a version of yourself who decided to work in the mines to pay for your mom's medical bills. He gives you +50% efficiency when mining metals, and branches off the Technician's timeline.
Scientist
By far the best alter, the Scientist branches off the Technician, deciding money isn't everything and prioritizing work by getting a PhD. He is the only alter that can work in the Research Lab, and he is necessary for mission-related research.
Botanist
The Botanist instead follows Lena when she is offered a job abroad, deciding that love is the most important thing to him. He gives you 100% efficiency when growing crops in the Greenhouse.
Refiner
The Refiner branches off the Technician, but instead decides to move away when Jan's mom dies. He is 50% faster when refining enriched metal deposits into metals and organics.
Doctor
At 15 years old, the Doctor decides to help a woman in distress, but Jan instead walks away. He heals alters eight times faster at the Infirmary, and cooks food faster, too.
Shrink
This is one of the alters that branches off another alter's timeline, so the Doctor must be unlocked first. The Shrink comforts alters in distress in the Contemplation Room.
Guard
When at 25 years old you're approached by some dodgy dealers in the workshop you're working at, you choose to work with them, instead of leaving the business. This alter disciplines alters in the Contemplation Room.
Worker
Branching off the Refiner, instead of leaving the union fight, you instead decide to stay and fight back. The Worker provides +50% efficiency when crafting items in the Workshop.
